About the Izalco volcano hike
Izalco is the youngest volcano in El Salvador and one of the youngest on the continent, with an almost perfect cone. It erupted without stopping for more than 196 years, and ships used its glow to find the port of Acajutla, so people called it the “Lighthouse of the Pacific”. On this hike you climb it from Cerro Verde National Park and finish the day at Lake Coatepeque.
Down through the cloud forest
The hike starts at the top of Cerro Verde National Park, about an hour and a half from San Salvador. First we walk down through the misty forest to the foot of Izalco.
Up the lava cone
Then the climb begins on slopes made almost entirely of dry lava. It is one of the most challenging hikes in the country: about 2 hours to the top and another 2 to come back, so a good fitness level helps a lot.
The summit
From the top you see the old lava flows, the Santa Ana volcano, Lake Coatepeque and, on clear days, the Pacific. You can feel the warmth of the rocks and see small fumaroles.
Lake Coatepeque
Afterwards, we drive to Lake Coatepeque, a volcanic caldera that turns turquoise some times of the year. You can swim, take photos or have lunch with a view (not included).

Izalco volcano hike itinerary
Hotel or Airbnb pickup
Your guide picks you up in San Salvador. If you are staying at El Tunco, pickup is at 5:30 a.m.
Start of the hike
From Cerro Verde we walk down through the forest and start the climb across the lava fields.
Izalco crater
Reach the summit and look down into the crater, with views of the surrounding volcanoes and the Pacific.
Lake Coatepeque
Relax by the lake, swim or have lunch at a lakeside restaurant (not included).
Return
We drive back to San Salvador, about an hour and a half, or 2 hours to El Tunco.

How difficult is the hike?+
Moderate to challenging: about 6 km round trip with steep sections going down and up. A basic level of fitness is highly recommended.
How long is the hike?+
About 4 hours in total, including stops to rest and take photos.
Where does the hike start?+
Inside Cerro Verde National Park. You walk down first and then climb Izalco.
Is a guide required?+
Yes. For safety a local guide is mandatory, and it is included in the tour.
Can I swim in Lake Coatepeque?+
Yes. After the hike you have time to swim, have lunch or just enjoy the view.
What if it rains?+
The hike runs in light rain. If conditions are unsafe, we reschedule or adjust the itinerary.
