About the Gulf of Fonseca tour
The Gulf of Fonseca, in La Unión, is considered one of the best natural harbors in the world. It opens to the Pacific and is shared by El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, with a group of islands that belong to the three countries. On this tour we explore it by boat and stop on two Salvadoran islands.
The boat ride
From the port of La Unión we sail past the IRCA port and the coast of Punta Chiquirín, with its fishing boats and views of Conchagua volcano. At the base of the volcano we see sea caves and volcanic vents.
Meanguera del Golfo
Meanguera is the only municipality in El Salvador that is an island. We walk through its fishing village, past colorful houses and small shops, and see how families here live from fishing and farming.
Zacatillo island
Next, we stop on Zacatillo, a calm island where local families cook fresh seafood (lunch not included). Its beach has very gentle waves, and the island, once a prison, is now home to about 2,000 people.
